Fire Display Programme

On the Saturday 19th of July I went to see the Croydon Fire Brigade Display at Woodside.

(I am a bit surprised to see that I didn't take my camera to this event.)

It started with a boring parade and inspection. The a team of two men went up the outside of a 5 storey tower with 2 ladders with hooks on the end. Then there was an inter-station escape competition. 3 stations were represented. 2 men ran up a ladder and one carried the other one down again. Then the teams put their ladder back on the engine again.

Next was a competition between the 3 stations for pumping. They started with their hoses etc in a triangle and raced to connect them to the engine and ran out lengths of hose to the final nozzle - the winning team was the first to knock over a target. The water was switched on as soon as the first length of hose was attached and the crew had to keep ahead of the water coming down the hose while connecting the next sections.

Then there was a demonstration of the equipment on the Emergency Tender. Two men went up the tower, which was filled with smoke, wearing oxygen masks. Meanwhile two men cut through an iron sheet with a circular saw and another cut through a girder with an oxy-acetaline (that's how I wrote it at the time) burner. Just as they were about to drive off, a man dressed as a boy came running with his head stuck through some railings. The fireman put a gadget in between the rails, pressed a button and the rails bent.
