A History of Me Previous Next (not written yet)
The Crab and Winkle Line was the world's first steam-hauled passenger railway and the 'first regular steam passenger railway in the world'
It was the first commercial railway in southern England and Whitstable was once home to the world's oldest railway bridge, but this was demolished during the 1970s.
The line also contained the world's first passenger train tunnel.
The line became the first in the world to introduce season tickets, costing two guineas (£2. 2s.) for just over seven months travel, in 1834. A family season ticket for the same period cost five guineas. The company also introduced containers for the transport of goods direct from railway wagon to ship and vice versa. It may also have been the first to introduce a Sunday passenger service.
