Whitstable Harbour

Whitstable Harbour Station in 1927.

Whitstable Harbour station was built in 1846, two years after the South Eastern Railway (SER) began working the line. Canopies to protect passengers from the elements were fitted to the open carriages but being open at the sides were often removed by the wind on the high section of the line. The station closed to passengers in 1849 when a single-platform station was built on the other side of the road.

The site of the Whitstable terminus is now occupied by Whitstable Youth Club, next to the main health centre. The track went right into the harbour but was also unsuitable for engines, so horses shunted the trucks into the station. The line crossed over the main London to Ramsgate line near Whitstable station, so people would have had the opportunity to see the relatively rare site of one train passing over another. No trace remains of the Crab & Winkle railway in the Whitstable Harbour area apart from a pair of wrought iron gates in the perimeter fence with the 'SECR' logo in the centre of each. This dates these at the turn of the 19th to 20th century when the SER and the LC&DR amalgamated.
