Introduction and Index

Jesus said to his disciples, "Let us go across to the other side of the lake." So they left the crowd; the disciples got into the boat in which Jesus was already sitting, and they took him with them. Other boats were there too. Suddenly a strong wind blew up, and the waves began to spill over into the boat, so that it was about to fill with water. Jesus was in the back of the boat, sleeping with his head on a pillow. The disciples woke him up and said, "Teacher don't you care that we are about to die?",/p>

Jesus stood up and commanded the wind, "Be quiet!" and he said to the waves, "Be still!" The wind died down, and there was a great calm. Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Why are you frightened? Have you still no faith?"

But they were terribly afraid and said to one another, "Who is this man? Even the winds and the waves obey him!" - Mark 4 v 35 - 41

Master, are you really able and willing to help when things go badly wrong? There are so many times when storms seem to hit my life. Times when sorrow like a mighty wave rolls over me - times of frustration, of anger, of grief, of disappointment. When the disciples were in danger on the lake, the really important thing was that you were there in the thick of it with them. When I have to face difficult times, please assure me that you are there with me. When guilt or grief, bitterness or rage, disappointment and frustration seem about to swamp me, please let me hear your voice speaking peace to me deep down inside. Give me new strength so that I can cope with whatever life may throw at me.
