Introduction and Index

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord. He was sitting on his throne, high and exalted, and his robe filled the whole Temple. Round him flaming creatures were standing ..

They were calling out to each other: 'Holy, holy, holy! The Lord Almighty is holy! His glory fills the world.' - Isaiah 6 v 1 - 3

Lord, from the very beginning you are God. You are my God, holy and eternal... Your eyes are too holy to look at evil, and you cannot stand the sight of people doing wrong. - Habakkuk 1 v 12 - 13

If you kept a record of our sins, who could escape being condemned? But you forgive us, so that we should stand in awe of you. - Psalm 130 v 3 - 4

God has shown how much he loves us - it was while we were still sinners that Christ died for us. - Romans 5 v 8

The Lord is merciful and loving, slow to become angry and full of constant love. He does not keep on rebuking; he is not angry for ever. He does not punish us as we deserve or repay us according to our sins and wrongs. - Psalm 103 v 8- 10

Lord, there are two things I find hard to keep in balance. I know that you are holy - that you have never and will never do anything wrong. Yet you love people who are just the opposite! You are holy, yet at the same time, you are sympathetic and merciful, even to very bad people! I know the angels in heaven are loved by you and they worship you. But, there again, they are not sinful like we human beings. It is when I try to think about just how perfect you are that I realise how bad is even the very best of us mortals. Please teach me that, though you hate the sins we are guilty of, you love each one of us with an everlasting love which nothing can change. Teach me to hate every kind of wrong, but, at the same time, to be patient and kind to people, even those who have wronged me.
