Alasdair was born on the 4th August 2000 and 10 days later was rushed to hospital in Canterbury, where he was found to have a serious heart condition (aortic atresia). He was operated on at Guys Hospital, London 4 days later: this was the first of a 3 part Norwood procedure, which is used for the more frequent hypoplastic left heart syndrome.
